Otago had to defend their hearts out to claim a 21-14 win over fellow Championship side Manawatu in Palmerston North.
The win gives Otago the chance to top the Championship standings while Manawatu will have to wait for other results to see if they will make the semi finals.
Otago were not great with the ball in the first half, but took opportunities when they presented themselves.
After Tony Ensor picked up the first try after eight minutes, Otago went straight back on the attack and it led to their second three minutes later.
First five Scott Eade put in a cross-field kick to an open Adam Knight, however the bounce wasn't kind but somehow he managed to save the ball before it went dead, flicking it back infield for Matt Faddes to dive on the loose ball and extend Otago's lead.
Otago were reduced to 14 men, and the Turbos make them pay when Ngani Laumape collected a Otere Black grubber kick to close the gap.
Adam Knight was rewarded for his earlier efforts when he scored Otago's third try after he kicked forward a loose ball which appeared to be going into touch and won the race to the ball.
Otago led 18-7 at the break.
Aaron Cruden came on in the second half for the home side, and he made an immediate impact as the Turbos had plenty of ball in Otago territory, but they could not find away through the Otago defence.
It took them till the 70th minute before they cracked, Cruden put fullback Ambrose Curtis into a gap and he found replacement halfback Jamie Booth for the try.
Then Turbos thought they tied thing sup with minutes to go, but the TMO ruled the footage inconclusive.
