All Blacks on the move?

The list of former All Blacks currently plying their trade in Europe is a long one.

The likes of Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Ali Williams and Nick Evans reflect the modern era of professionalism – 21 years since the game abandoned amateurism.

It’s become commonplace for players to ‘cash in’, taste a new culture and broaden their horizons. And while it sticks in the craw of many New Zealand supporters, it’s simply the modern world.

However, when Ben Smith revealed exclusively to Newshub on Tuesday that he’d "look at the options" regarding a move abroad, alarm bells rang loudly.

This isn’t the case of a player nearing the end of his career – at 30, 'Ben from accounts' still has plenty to offer at the elite level.

Of course he’s not the only star being scouted…so which of this talented trio fancies a highly paid change of scenery and who would be missed the most?

Ben Smith, age 30, All Black appearances 60 (135 points)

When you lose one reliable Smith (Conrad), it’s always nice t have a rock-solid namesake to replace him as anchor of the backline. And, as the likes of Charles Piutau faded from view, Ben gradually became one of the first guys on the team-sheet.

It’s not just his versatility and skill-set giving him the edge, but his bloody-mindedness.

“He’s recognised by everyone as a world class player… a great story of perseverance,” coach Steve Hansen said earlier this year.

Out of all the names bubbling in the rumour cauldron, his would surely be the biggest loss.

Israel Dagg, age 28, AB apps 60 (123 points)

Incredibly similar stats to his fullback rival Smith, the departure of Dagg would be less of a surprise.

‘Izzy’ struggled with injuries during 2014-15 and played only three tests last year, missing out on the World Cup squad.

But his recent form has catapulted him back up to elite level and the title of All Blacks leading try scorer for 2016.

Hansen has called him a ‘vital ingredient’, but with the likes of Leinster, Toulon and several other French clubs sniffing around, there’s surely fire fuelling the smoke.

Malakai Fekitoa, age 24, AB apps 23 (40 points)

Perhaps the most surprising addition to the rumour mill, Tongan-born Fekitoa has only been in the international set-up for two years.

He was reportedly part of the conversation this week in Paris involving Dagg and Toulon boss Mourad Boudjellal (although the outspoken Frenchman does love a good headline). An ever-willing runner, the form of Anton Lienert-Brown has put him in the shade this year and he’s certainly not first choice.
