The Breakers have secured a replacement for injured import Ben Woodside.
David Stockton, son of NBA hall of fame point guard John Stockton, will leave his Croatian side Cedevita Zagreb to join the Auckland-based club, according to Bleacher Report's David Pick.
Pick, a basketball reporter based out of Israel, confirmed that Stockton had agreed to terms with the Breakers.
"The deal has officially been signed," he told Newshub.
"He's supposed to be leaving Croatia either today or tomorrow. I assume by the weekend he'll be in New Zealand."
Woodside has been ruled out for at least two months following a serious foot injury suffered during his side's win over Melbourne United last Friday.
Stockton played for his father's alma mater Gonzaga, where he contributed four years of solid, but modest, production before going undrafted in 2014.
Pick believes Stockton will thrive in New Zealand after a relatively disappointing stint in Europe which was hampered by a time-share situation at Cedevita's crowded point guard spot, which ultimately resulted in his release.
"I think he's going to be great in New Zealand. The basketball style there suits him more.
"It's a great get for the New Zealand Breakers."
After stints in the NBA's summer league with the Phoenix Suns and the Washington Wizards, Stockton was picked up by the Sacramento Kings on a 10-day contract, posting per game averages of 2.7 points and 3.0 assists over three appearances before going on to star with the D-league's Reno Bighorns.
He signed a three-year deal with the Cedevita in July of this year, playing in 12 games before being granted a release to join the Breakers.
While Stockton clearly isn't playing at the elite level of that of his legendary dad, there are undeniable similarities in his game, says Pick.
"There are definitely shades of his father – the way he sees the court, the way he carries himself.
"He plays as a floor general."
John Stockton was a member of the 1992 USA Olympic 'Dream Team' and enjoyed a storied 19-year career with the NBA's Utah Jazz, where he formed one of the game's most celebrated one-two punches alongside power-forward Karl 'The Mailman' Malone.
He still holds the all-time records for both career assists (15,806) and steals (3,265).
Although the Breakers had earlier expressed their desire to bring in a new import before their next game against the Cairns Taipans on Friday, it's unlikely Stockton will be available.
