Felipe Massa receives guard of honour in pit lane at Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix

In conditions which, at the time were too bad to race in – Formula One has delivered one of the finest moments in years.

The Brazilian Grand Prix will likely go down in the record books as the race which kept the 2016 Drivers Championship alive until the final race in Abu Dhabi. But it will be particularly remembered for this special moment

The moment followed Felipe Massa succumbing to the torrid conditions and wrecking his Williams near the pit entry.

This wasn’t how the Brazilian wanted to finish his final F1 race in his home town.

But if you went by the reaction of the Brazilian fans, he may as well won it, receiving thunderous applause has he walked back to the pits holding a Brazilian flag aloft.

The most special moment was when he arrived in pit lane. With the race under yellow flags (due to his abandoned car) rival teams including Mercedes and his old Ferrari crew assembled en masse to give one of the sport's truly good blokes an impromptu guard of honour before he was met by his wife and son.

In tears the whole time, he later said he didn’t deserve such a reaction. I for one reckon he did – especially on a miserable day where his crash revealed a rare glimpse into the human side of what is so often a heartless sport.
