Melbourne Cup winner 2016: Almandin

Almandin has taken out the 2016 Melbourne Cup.

Almandin was an outside favourite to take out the great race, and stormed home to pip second placed Heartbreak City at the post.

Third place went to Hartnell.

The win marks a record fifth Melbourne Cup for Almandin's owner Lloyd Williams, and the second for jockey Kerrin McEvoy following his victory on Kiwi horse Brew back in 2000.

"It's a dream come true," said McEvoy. "I like these staying races, and I love the Melbourne Cup."

The TAB announced that a new record was set for New Zealanders taking a punt on the race with 1.4 million bets placed, which is up a total of 400,000 on last year.
