Outgoing Springbok captain Adriaan Strauss hasn't minced words ahead of their final Test of the year against Wales, suggesting that things will change after their season concludes.
A clearly embarrassed Strauss reinforced what every other Springboks fan was thinking when it came to their results in 2016.
"We've definitely fell short of the ability we've got as a team, so that's not good enough," he said at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
"We see this as a Test match that we must win for ourselves, our supporters.
"The morale is quite low back in South Africa and we want to change that as best we can. We've got one game left to do it."
Strauss became captain at the beginning of the year and has led the team through a disastrous 2016, where the Springboks recorded just four wins in 11 Tests.
And the 31-year-old said that even if South Africa do escape with a win against Wales on Sunday morning (NZ time), it's not a year the team will be able to put behind them easily.
"You have to win every single Test match. I don't think tomorrow if we get a good result, we can put the year behind us and we can just move forward.
"A lot of discussions will take place afterwards and a lot of tweaks are necessary."
Strauss bizarrely made the decision to retire from international rugby at the conclusion of his first year as Springboks captain. And he hopes he can finish with the side on a high.
"They want to come out and prove themselves in front of their home crowd.
"They're not necessarily in a similar situation but I think both teams have something to prove and a lot to play for. It's going to be a massive game and there's a lot to play, a lot at stake for both teams."
South Africa has only lost to Wales twice in the teams' 31-match history.
