Steven Adams now more likely to play for Tall Blacks, says Kirk Penney

Steven Adams $140 Million contract extension is the talk of New Zealand basketball, and it was a hot topic at Breakers training today.

Veteran guard Kirk Penney has had a couple of stints in the NBA and is full of admiration for Adams achievements.

"I think he's been really smart along the way, knowing when to play, when not to play, really setting up for this moment," said the 35-year-old.

"It has been a bit of a long game for him to get to this point, all starting when he was a teenager here"

And now that Adams has secured his NBA playing future, Penney thinks there's a good chance Adams could pull on the Tall Blacks jersey.

"From my standpoint I would think it's more likely, personally, because all of it's been building up to this and this is a life changing amount of money.

"I'd hope that now he can rest easy knowing that he's achieved this much and could put on the black singlet."

Breakers and Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare was a little less committal saying he hadn't thought about a change in Adams Tall Blacks status and that he'd leave him to celebrate his new contract

"He'll be pretty busy for a while, talking to a lot of people. I'll just let that sink in and settle down before I touch base with him."

It shouldn't be hard for Henare to get in touch with Adams when the time is right, the 23-year-old's first purchase after inking the contract was a new phone.
