New Zealand driver Brendon Hartley is hoping to have another Kiwi at his side next year at the FIA World Endurance Championships.

With Hartley's teammate Mark Webber retiring, there is a spot up for grabs in the Porsche car.

Two drivers are fighting to claim the position: Englishman Nick Tandy and Kiwi Earl Bamber. Both Tandy and Bamber were teammates along with Nico Hulkenberg in 2015, when they won the famous 24-hour Le Mans in 2015.

While it would be incredible to have two Kiwis racing for the same team, it would be more than that for Hartley and Bamber, who grew up as childhood friends in Manawatu.

"We grew up go-karting together and spent time on his farm, but I have no idea what will happen," said Hartley.

"It's incredible we both ended up as professional drivers."

Bamber knows he will be driving in a Porsche next year, but doesn't know what class he will be participating in - and he's hoping it will be alongside Hartley.

"I know I'll be driving a Porsche, but I don't know what shape, size or what category," said Bamber. "They will probably text me sometime soon and let me know."

Hartley's team won the World Endurance Championship's in 2015, but only managed fourth this year after a poor start to the season.

Both Hartley and Bamber are back in New Zealand for the Legends of Speed dinner in Auckland to celebrate the success of Kiwi drivers around the globe.

The dinner features drivers like Scott Dixon, Hayden Paddon, Greg Murphy, Fabian Coulthard and Shane van Gisbergen.

The drivers are raising money for the Elite Academy of Motorsport, as well as helping to fund the attempt to get Rally New Zealand back on the WRC calendar from 2018.

"It's nice to see everybody has come back to New Zealand to support the young guys and also bring the Rally back," said Bamber.

"It would be awesome to see those rally cars back in New Zealand."

Rally New Zealand was last on the WRC calendar in 2012.
