Olympic silver medallist Luuka Jones will race in the newly added canoe-single class at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the hope she can snare a rare double gold.

The 28-year-old won Olympic silver at the Rio Games but she revealed exclusively to Newshub that she'll take up the discipline in addition to the slalom kayak (K1) ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

"I'm going to take up the canoe discipline which has come in in Tokyo," said Jones.

"To try and go there competing in two classes, It's another big challenge."

Taking another step on the medal dais might seem like enough of a challenge after claiming historic silver in Rio.

But she said that adding another discipline to her race schedule hasn't come completely against the flow.

"I guess before the Games I'd already been thinking about it, and then when I got back I started training in a C-1," said Jones.

"There's a lot of crossover between the disciplines, so it's a good choice I think."

Jones is racing this week at the Whitewater XL event in Auckland, which has attracted the sport's biggest stars to the country.
