Springbok five-eighth Johan Goosen has angered his club by announcing his retirement just eight months after signing a contract extension through to 2020.
Goosen, who plays alongside Dan Carter at Paris club Racing 92, is apparently heading home to South Africa to become a commercial director.
However, according to French publication Le Parisien, the club is considering legal action as they believe that the 24-year-old is retiring in order to get out of his contact.
The publication also suggests that Goosen is anxious to make a move to Montpellier which would see Goosen's salary doubled to €1 million a season.
The club raised doubts over Goosen's retirement.
"We regret that so obviously talented a young player has been misguided and abandoned professional rugby as it seems obvious that the role of commercial director is incompatible with high level sport," Racing president Jacky Lorenzetti said.
"Racing 92 reserves the right for a judicial follow-up to both Johan Goosen and those who advise him."
The decision has also bewildered members of the team's coaching staff including Racing 92 assistant coach Ronan O'Gara.
"I found out on Twitter and I'm part of the management," O'Gara told World Rugby Magazine.
