Video: Ex-Blackcap Hamish Marshall enjoying return to cricket

If you watch the Wellington Firebirds this summer, you might recognise the face - or at least hair - of one of their batsmen.

After almost a decade playing English county cricket, former Blackcap Hamish Marshall's returned to play for the Wellington Firebirds and is relishing being back in New Zealand.

The 37-year-old's leading Wellington in the domestic T-20 competition, nearly twelve years since playing the inaugural international against Australia.

"That game was a lot of fun," said Marshall. "Twenty20's obviously changed quite a bit as it's taken a lot more seriously now."

Nowadays Marshall's content playing at home and won't be cashing in on rich overseas leagues.

He's played over 700 first class games and is approaching two decades of first class cricket.

Marshall was a Northern Districts man before departing for the county scene. He'd forged a solid career including the highlight of batting with his twin brother James and hitting two Test hundreds.

Fielding has always been one of his most valuable assets, but he admits age has caught up to a degree.

"I'm still fielding at backward point," said Marshall. "The desire is still there to throw myself round."

Marshall scored 100 not out for Wellington against Otago two days ago, so the desire is certainly there to play, and he's certainly showing no signs of giving up just yet
