Neil Wagner tried a short ball attack against Mushfiqur but it proved fruitless. Mitchell Santner bowled four overs of spin but the pitch wasn't offering the home bowlers much assistance.
The morning's effort has helped the tourists establish the upper hand in the Test.
They have never beaten New Zealand in a Test and their five matches in New Zealand have all ended in heavy defeat.
