Rain has set in at Auckland's ASB Classic, disrupting most of the day with only three games being completed.
The day was billed as a big one with Serena Williams set to headline the night session. However with rain stopping play at around 4pm, the day session never looked to get into full swing, leaving a number of unfinished and unplayed matches scheduled for day one.
Lucie Safarova was one of the few that got on the court and made hay while the sun shone with a breezy 6-1 6-2 win over compatriot Denisa Allertova.
Meanwhile, Japan's Naomi Osaka backed the billing of being the next Serena Williams by winning the first set over German Annika Beck before wet weather stopped play.
The weather teased with Osaka and Beck coming on and off the court a number of times before the wet court followed by more rain called a lengthy delay.
Play is not set to resume until at least 8pm.
