Former Springbok hard man Rassie Erasmus has been offered a five-year deal to take over the Springboks at the end of the month according to reports out of South Africa.
Current head coach Allister Coetzee oversaw one of the worst calendar years in South African rugby history, losing eight out of 12 Tests.
And SA Rugby president Mark Alexander last week gave the biggest indication that Coetzee would be shown the door at the end of January.
"We're not sure which way we're going, whether we're keeping Allister or not," Alexander told City Press newspaper.
"We still have presentations to go through, but no formal decision has been made on whether we're going forward with him or not.
"At the end of January we'll make an announcement on whether we're keeping him."
Erasmus, who was capped 36 times for South Africa between 1997 and 2001, is currently the high performance director at Irish club Munster.
When contacted, his representative refused to acknowledge if any offer was made but was adamant Erasmus wouldn't entertain the idea of coaching the Springboks.
"Rassie has a contract with Munster and won't travel to South Africa for discussions while doing so well with Munster," Frikkie Erasmus, Rassie's lawyer, told rugby365.com.
"Rassie is very happy in Ireland. He doesn't have to deal with interference as is the case in South Africa. He still has plenty of time left on his contract, which is a very good one."
