Video: Billy Stairmand wins record sixth national surfing title

Billy Stairmand has won a record sixth national open men's surfing title in impressive style.

Stairmand recorded a 14.63 total for his two best waves to beat fellow Raglan surfer Taylor Hutchinson and youngsters Elliot Brown and Elliot Paerata Reid in the final.

"It's the best thing to start my year off, I am more competitive here than I am all year, to start the year with a national title gives you confidence," said Stairmand.

Former junior world champion Ella Williams had a big battle in the final of the Open Women's Division after Gabriella Sansom surfed to a final-high single wave score of 7.83.

That put Williams on the backfoot before she secured a pair of six point rides then went on to secure a 7.17 and then a 7.77 on her last wave to claim her second national title in the division.

"I am so happy to defend the title this year, we have had some hard conditions throughout the week but the waves were good today and I enjoyed being pushed by all the Kiwi girls who continue to improve year after year," said Williams.

Sansom's twin sister Bianca finished in third and Britt Kindred in fourth.

Both Stairmand and Williams now look forward to the world qualifying series on the Gold Coast at the end of the month.
