Brendon Leitch's car summersaults in Toyota Racing Series

The New Zealand Grand Prix weekend got off to a terrifying start for three of the drivers at Manfeild in Palmerston North on Saturday.

On lap two of Toyota Racing Series race one, Kiwi driver Brendon Leitch somersaulted over the top of two cars before smashing down on the infield.

The race was stopped for 20 minutes as the mess was cleared up.

Luckily all the drivers involved walked away without any serious injury.

"I think I saw the sky twice," said Leitch.

"I reckon that would be worth a 10 at the Olympics.

"It's motorsport. You've got to take it on the chin. We'll be back out tomorrow and hopefully get a decent result."

Once the race got back underway, Brazilian Pedro Piquet took the lead and went onto secure his second win in a row. The win saw Piquet jump to second on the drivers' standings.

The 18-year-old is the son of three-time F1 World Champion Nelson Piquet.

Series leader Thomas Randle finished fifth while Kiwi Marcus Armstrong finished third.

Sunday will feature the second race of the Toyota Racing Series, and the 62nd New Zealand Grand Prix.
