Early-release newspapers in US show Patriots Super Bowl defeat

Newspapers are said to be a dying medium - but in some parts of the United States, those who do still get them were greeted with a front page incorrectly depicting the New England Patriots suffering a big defeat to the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

Early edition newspapers were printed and delivered in anticipation of the Patriots loss after they went down 28-3 with just a quarter to play.

Reputable publication from the Boston Globe printed the words "A Bitter End" on the front page with a Patriots' player on his hands and knees and Falcons cornerback Robert Alford streaking away in the background.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post was a little more reserved, printing the same image with the headline "Falcons are off and running in Super Bowl".

The error further illustrates the magnitude of the record comeback that saw the Patriots chew up a 25-point deficit in the third quarter to win 34-28.

It was quarterback Tom Brady's fifth Super Bowl ring in 17 years with the team. The 39-year-old also claimed his fourth MVP award.
