NZ-born England captain Dylan Hartley to miss out on Lions selection, say reports

Kiwi-born hooker Dylan Hartley is likely to be one major omission from the Lions squad to tour New Zealand.

Reports by the UK's Daily Telegraph indicate that Warren Gatland and his coaching staff have overlooked the Northampton forward after holding one final selection meeting before officially announcing the squad at 11pm Wednesday (NZ time).

Hartley missed the tour to Australia in 2013 after receiving an 11-game ban for referee abuse, and it's believed on this occasion it will be Welsh hooker Ken Owens who will be preferred.

It would mark the third consecutive time an England captain has been passed up for Lions tour selection after Steve Borthwick in 2009 and Chris Robshaw in 2013.

The 31-year-old was at one stage touted as a frontrunner to be awarded the captaincy but has since fallen out of favour following a mediocre Six Nations tournament, with his replacement Jamie George working his way ahead of him in the pecking order.

Wales centre Jamie Roberts, a veteran of two Lions tours, is thought to be another surprise inclusion in the squad despite having been ousted from the Welsh starting XV during the Six Nations.

Scotland is expected to have just one representative in sparkplug fullback Stuart Hogg.
