Video: One-eyed rugby player Ian McKinley receives international call-up

Former Leinster player Ian McKinley has been called into the Italian side to face the Wallabies, Scotland and Fiji despite having the use of just one eye.

The 27-year-old will become the first international player with the condition after being brought in by Italy coach Conor O'Shea for their three-match tour to the southern hemisphere in June.

McKinley - former captain of the Ireland under 20s - was dealt a devastating blow back in 2011 after a trailing boot almost caused his eyeball to be removed from its socket.

Despite regaining most of his sight in that eye, the issue deteriorated and he was forced into retirement after undergoing surgery.

However, the five-eighth made his way back to rugby with Italy's third division in 2012, wearing special protective goggles.

Plying his trade in lower division Italian sides since, McKinley was this season picked up by Pro12 side Treviso who play in the European Challenge Cup.

Italy will play Scotland first in a historical Test match in Singapore followed by Fiji in Suva before finishing their tour in Brisbane against the Wallabies.
