Video: Big Wave, Wipe-out of the year awards presented

The world's best big wave surfers gathered in Huntington Beach, California this past weekend for the World Surf League (WSL) Awards.

The gala ceremony at the Pasea Hotel and Spa acknowledged the greatest rides of the past year and also honoured one man for magnificent failure.

The top prize went to Hawaii's Billy Kemper, who walked away with the Ride of the Year award.

Kemper dedicated the award to his mother Lisa, who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer.

Jamie Mitchell won the Men's Overall Performance award.

The Gold Coast surfer dedicated the prize to his wife and daughter, then announced the couple were expecting another child.

Canadian Paige Alms won the Women's Best Overall Performance Award.

Alms said the award was for all the women surfers who inspired her to take up the sport.

The honour that no one wanted went to California native Wilem Banks, who was given the Wipeout of the Year award for his crash on home waters at Mavericks.

Banks jokingly said he hopes never again to be awarded for failing better than anyone on tour, but still called winning for top wipeout "amazing".

Other winners on the night included Francisco Porcella with the Biggest Wave Award, Ben Andrews, who secured the Best Paddle Award for his ride at Mavericks, California, and Shanan Worrall for Tube of the Year.
