America's Cup 2017: Social media erupts in praise for Team NZ

Team New Zealand has snatched back the America's Cup from Oracle USA, blazing across the finish line 55 seconds ahead of their arch rivals.

Around the world social media has erupted with praise for the Kiwis.

"A few tears here in Doha," Al Jazeera presenter and New Zealander Kamahl Santamaria said on Twitter.

"So proud of @EmiratesTeamNZ. My team. OUR team."

"Genuinely amazing that @EmiratesTeamNZ won with ingenuity like putting cyclists on the boat," Guy Williams tweeted.

There was widespread congratulations from other Kiwi sport legends. Dame Valerie Adams wrote: "Congratulations @EmiratesTeamNZ NZ is so very proud. #bringthecuphome #kiwipride."

"What a win by @EmiratesTeamNZ! Awesome way to start the day #proud" the Silver Ferns said on Twitter.

Blackcap Martin Guptill said: "Congrats to @EmiratesTeamNZ for regaining the Americas cup today! Well done to @peteburling for leading the team and bringing it home!"

Prime Minister Bill English shared a video of himself congratulating the team as they crossed the finish line.

"Yes! Yes! You beauties," he says.

Team NZ's opponents have also been gracious in defeat. Oracle USA and Sweden's Artemis both tweeted their congratulations.

Meanwhile crowds have braved the freezing early morning to gather at Auckland's Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the Viaduct Harbour.

Thousands of fans, as well as friends and family of the sailors were packed into the club, where the champagne flowed.
