Blackcaps crash to heavy defeat to hosts England at Champions Trophy

The Blackcaps have crashed to a heavy defeat to hosts England in their penultimate round robin match at the Champions Trophy.

The New Zealanders fell 87 runs short of their 311 run target and now find themselves in a precarious position with one match left to play against Bangladesh and a weak net run-rate.

They're now reliant on both Australia losing heavily in their own contest with England and defeating the Tigers on Friday (NZ time) to have any hope of advancing in the competition.

Meanwhile, England becomes the first team to qualify for the semi-finals stage.

The visitors made a measured start to their chase after recovering from the loss of Luke Ronchi to a golden duck, but once skipper Kane Williamson departed after a dogged 87 the wickets began to tumble.

New Zealand lost three quick wickets in the space of seven overs from which they never recovered, ultimately dismissed for 223.

Williamson afterwards said England stepped up with both bat and ball.

"They had a number of contributions which allowed them to get what I think was an above-par score," said the NZ captain.

"England outplayed us in all areas today - credit to them for the way they went about their business, especially with ball in hand."

To add insult to injury the Blackcaps were also fined for a slow over-rate, Williamson docked 40 per cent of his match fee and the rest of the team 20 per cent each.

Joe Root was the pick of the English batsman with 64, while Liam Plunkett did the damage with the ball picking up 4 wickets for 55.

Corey Anderson was New Zealand's best with the ball with three wickets for 55.
