After being omitted from the All Blacks squad to play the British & Irish Lions, midfielder Malakai Fekitoa could be on his way to France as soon as the end of the season.

Off contract at the end of the year, Newshub understands Fekitoa's been fielding an offer from Toulon since February.

But while he was an All Black, Fekitoa was reportedly unwilling to entertain the idea of leaving New Zealand.

A source at Toulon has now told Midi Olympique they're "relatively optimistic" about the arrival of Fekitoa who's been offered a two-year-contract with the French glamour club.

It would be a frustrating end to his playing days in New Zealand with the midfielder said to have been "bitterly disappointed" at missing out on All Black selection for the Lions series.

The move would see Fekitoa join former All Blacks centre Ma'a Nonu in Toulon as well as new signing Tawera Kerr-Barlow who will depart at the end of the season.
