Kiwi giant Steven Adams is inventing new ways to improve his free-throw game, and it certainly isn't textbook.

The 2.13m centre has one of the worst percentages in the league from the charity stripe, sitting at 36 percent for the 2016/17 season.

However the New Zealand-born Oklahoma City Thunder star showed improvement in the playoffs  registering a touch over 43 percent, thanks in part to an odd practice regime.

It turns out that during his free-throw sessions, Adams has one of Oklahoma City's coaching staff provide a unique distraction tactic.

CBS reports he has Thunder assistant coach Darko Rajakovic come out of nowhere and, every once in a while, upper-cut him in the stomach just when he least expects it.

It will be interesting to see if his free-throw percentage continues to rise in the upcoming season.
