Defending champion Gary Anderson has been sensationally dumped out of the Auckland Darts Masters, beaten by Australian Kyle Anderson.

The two-time-world champion was ousted 6-4 by the 29-year-old in a faultless performance that left 'The Flying Scotsman' on the back foot for the entirety of the match.

Anderson wasn't the only big name to fall on the opening night, with his compatriot and world no 3 Peter Wright falling to another giant-killing Australian, Corey Cadby.

The 22-year-old landed six 180s in the night's final game to send home the colourful Wright, who was sporting his trademark mohawk.

No problems however for the retiring great Phil 'The Power' Taylor, who fended off local Darren Herewini 6-4 in a high quality affair.

There were also wins for Raymond van Barneveld, Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney, James Wade and the 'Wizard' Simon Whitlock.

Action continues in Auckland on Saturday night with the quarter-final matchups.

Quarterfinals: Daryl Gurney v James Wade, Raymond van Barneveld v Phil Taylor, Kyle Anderson v Simon Whitlock; Michael Smith v Corey Cadby
