Stacy Lewis wins LPGA event in Portland after pledging her entire earnings to Hurricane Harvey relief

When American golfer Stacy Lewis pledged to donate her entire cheque from the LPGA event in Portland towards Hurricane Harvey relief, she scarcely imagined it would be the winner's one.

As it turned out, Lewis stroked her way to both her first tournament win since June 2014 and a $US195,000 ($NZ 272,422) contribution towards those suffering through incessant flooding in Houston.

The 32-year-old's ties to the region are strong having grown up just outside of the city, with her husband the current women's golf coach at the University of Houston.

She signalled her intentions prior to the tournment via Twitter, and was almost overcome with emotion as she came to terms with what she'd accomplished after sinking a three-foot putt to seal her first-place finish.

"When I said that I had the goal of winning the tournament, and you've got to get a lot of things right to go your way," Lewis said immediately following her victory.

"We're going to be able to help people rebuild houses and get their homes back. That's more important than any win."

It was also revealed following her win that her primary sponsor KPMG would be matching her winnings, doubling the donation amount to $US390,000 ($NZ 544,844).

Hurricane Harvey continues to wreak havoc across Texas with over 43,000 people to date forced to evacuate their homes.
