Brendon Hartley's family watch proudly as Kiwi makes Formula 1 debut

The family of Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley couldn't be more proud after his debut in the Formula 1 on Monday morning (NZ time) at the US Grand Prix in Austin Texas.

And they showed their support with a gathering in his hometown of Palmerston North to watch it all unfold, with more than 100 people turning up at the local pub to cheer on the Manawatu native.

The 27-year-old became the first Kiwi in over 30 years to race in the Formula 1. The last Kiwi was Mike Thackwell who competed in the Canadian Grand Prix in 1984.

Brendon finished the race in 13th spot after starting at the back of the grid, and his father Bryan was delighted with his debut performance.

"His lap times were really good, he had a go at passing - he did everything right. His pit stops were excellent," said Bryan.

"I pinched myself all the way through so let's see if it can go further than this."
