Kiwi multisport athlete Terenzo Bozzone has finished in sixth at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on Sunday afternoon (NZ time).

He crossed the line in a time of eight hours, 13 minutes and six seconds - finishing 11 minutes and 36 seconds off from German winner Patrick Lange, while Canada's Lionel Sanders finished second and David McNamee of Great Britain was third.

It was a great result for the South African-born athlete who pulled out during the race last year during the bike leg.

"When things go quite well, you cross the line with more adrenaline going through the body and you don't feel too bad, but tomorrow I think I'll be quite sore," Bozzone told Newshub.

"Last year was really tough. I was in the shape of my life and when I got off the bike I couldn't see out of my eyes, and the nutrition and hydration wasn't getting through my body. I just welled up really bad and had to pull the pin.

"I've been working on my hydration and nutrition strategies, so now we can put a big tick next in that box because I could see out of my eyes this time."

Fellow New Zealander Braden Currie crossed the line in 29th, 48 minutes down on Lange who started the day strong, before two punctures saw him lose massive time.
