Wellington have dominated a struggling Southland team to further cement themselves as promotion favourites.

The visitors opened their account through fullback Trent Renata, who scored after his side turned down a shot at goal and took the scrum instead.

Moments later, Wellington doubled the score with a try to lock Will Mangos after evading a few would-be Stags defenders.

First-five Jackson Garden-Bachop was then in after intercepting a pass and racing away to score untouched.

Wellington scored their four-try bonus point through hooker Asafo Aumua following a drive.

A try to Thomas Umaga-Jensen after a barnstorming run by Aumua gave Wellington an comprehensive 35-0 halftime lead.

The second-half began much like the first, with Wes Goosen going over to score another five-pointer for Wellington.

The Stags did eventually get on the scoreboard after flanker Tim Boys scored in the corner.

But three more tries to Wellington through Regan Verney, Sitiveni Paongo and Kemera Hauiti-Parapara put the game beyond doubt.

Southland did have the last say with a try to lock Mike McKee, but the result was never in question as Wellington romped to an emphatic win.

Wellington will next host Northland, who sit second the the Championship table, while Southland are away to Otago.
