Sonny Bill Williams 'doesn't know the rules' - All Blacks coach Steve Hansen

All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams is back in the firing line after another brain fade cost the All Blacks a penalty try in their 38-18 win over France on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The 32-year-old spent 10 minutes in the sin-bin after he deliberately slapped the ball into touch in the All Blacks' in-goal area, a move commonly used in rugby league - a sport Williams used to play.

The play was a big turning point in the match, as France started to build momentum with a one-man advantage.

The penalty try was one of 11 penalties the All Blacks gave away in the second half, which was a big let-down after the team dominated the first half and led 31-5 at the break.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will be dusting off the rulebook, admitting after the match there is some confusion with the laws.

"He doesn't know the rules because he was playing league," Hansen told reporters after the match.

"I got a lesson myself from Fozzie [Ian Foster] that once you have committed an offence in the goal area it is like you are not there and they make you invisible, and they felt the Frenchman was going to catch the ball - good lesson for Sonny to catch it next time, not pat the ball out."

The high amount of penalties New Zealand gave away enabled France to get back into the match, but the All Blacks did enough in the end to hold out the French.

"As a result of that, we allowed the momentum to shift.

"The French were good enough to take advantage and put us under pressure, but I was happy with the way we fought our way through it.

"We'd scored enough points in the first half to get the job done."

The win over France was the All Blacks' 11th-straight over Les Bleus dating back to 2009.

The All Blacks face Scotland in their next match - a side who they have not faced in three years.

Scotland have never beaten New Zealand in 30 matches.
