Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard named New Zealand's Commonwealth Games team

Laurel Hubbard has been named in the New Zealand weightlifting team for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

She is first transgender athlete to represent New Zealand at international level and she will compete in the over-90kgs category.

Also in the women’s team are Aletha Boon (uner-58kgs) and Andrea Miller (under-69kg) who have previously competed at Commonwealth Games in different sporting codes.

Boon represented New Zealand at the Kuala Lumpur 1998 and Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games in gymnastics, while Miller won a bronze medal in hurdles at Delhi 2010.

Hubbard is one of 12 weightlifters named to represent New Zealand which includes Tracey Lambrechs who will compete in the under-90kg category.

Richard Patterson headlines the men's category and will be making history as he will become the first weightlifter to represent New Zealand at four Commonwealth Games.
