Former rower Hamish Bond's won the elite men's time trial at the National Road Cycling Championships with a hugely impressive ride in Napier.

Bond, who finished third last year, won by a minute and 29 seconds to record a time of 50 minutes and 48 seconds.

Michael Vink claimed second place, while Jason Christie finished third, a further eight seconds back.

Bond's time was a minute better than last year's champion Jack Bauer - and the conditions today were much worse than when Bauer won in 2017.

"It was hard, everytime I do a race like that I wonder what on earth I'm doing, maybe I should go back to rowing - it hurts and it carries on hurting for 50 minutes," Bond said after the race.
