Hurricanes assistant coach John Plumtree is set to have his promotion made official on Wednesday.

The Wellington-based franchise has called a press conference for the morning to announce the departing Chris Boyd's successor as head coach.

It’s understood there's been an agreement in place since the pair joined the team back in 2015 that it would be Plumtree who'd ultimately step into the role once Boyd moved on.

With Boyd having committed to a three-year deal with English side Northampton, it appears that time has now come.

The duo have enjoyed a successful tenure in charge of the Hurricanes after joining them as a package deal in 2015, guiding them to the franchise's maiden Super Rugby title in 2016 after finishing runners-up the season prior.

The Hurricanes play the Crusaders in Wellington on Saturday.
