Commonwealth Games: Athlete in hospital after contracting malaria

A Commonwealth Games athlete has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after contracting malaria in the lead up to the event.

The 23-year-old was admitted to Gold Coast University Hospital yesterday after suffering from the infection.

"The patient received immediate treatment for malaria on arrival at GCUH," games organisers said in a statement to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"The patient remains admitted to GCUH in a serious condition and continues to be closely monitored."

Due to patient confidentiality, they could not say which country the athlete was from.
