Ivan Mauger: A New Zealand sporting icon

For 25 years, speedway legend Ivan Mauger dominated the sport both in New Zealand and abroad.

Mauger won a record six world titles during the 1960's and 1970's, and is widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

Along with fellow Cantabrians Ronnie Moore and Barry Briggs, Kiwi riders claimed 12 world titles between them, essentially putting New Zealand on the map in the speedway world.

Awarded an OBE in 1989, Mauger was an inaugural inductee in the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame after winning 15 individual, pairs and teams world titles during his long professional career in Europe.

Mauger brought his passion home – promoting speedway downunder before retiring to the Gold Coast.

Having suffered from dementia in recent years, Mauger passed away Monday morning.
