Mika Vukona knew his time with the Breakers was up when he realised he and the new owners wanted different things from their team.
But despite moving to the Brisbane Bullets next season, New Zealand basketball fans can expect to see a lot more of him on the court.
The power forward will lead the Tall Blacks in their final two world cup qualifiers next month.
Vukona has a lot of memories to pack away before his move to Brisbane, his wife and two kids ready to embark on their next journey.
"It's a big move for the family, but something we're really looking forward to," Vukona told Newshub.
Vukona's been a part of the Breakers family for 13 years. He was involved in all four of the club's NBL titles, playing over 350 games in the process.
But at the end of last season, he quickly realised it was the end of his time in Auckland.
"When the General Manager sits you down and says 'look, these are the things that we're looking for', and it doesn't fit with what I wanted, I decided let's look elsewhere."
At 36-years-old, he's looking for more game time, while both going to the Olympics and playing with Steven Adams both on his bucket list.
"I'd love to play with the guy. It's something, before I hang up my boots up, to say I got to play with one of the legends of New Zealand Basketball."
The Tall Blacks captain could get his wish next month when the Kiwis host Hong Kong and China in their World Cup Qualifiers.
At least one win will guarantee them qualification to the next phase, and with it, a potential fifth World Cup in the black singlet.
So, while the door has closed on his time with the Breakers, there's still plenty more to pack into this stellar career.
