Boxing: Tony Bellew smashes forearm into David Haye's throat at final press conference ahead of heavyweight rematch

Tensions boiled over when heavyweight boxers Tony Bellew and David Haye stood face to face at their last press conference before their fight on Sunday (NZ time).

The rivals had been well-behaved until Friday's (NZ time) final head-to-head press conference ahead of their rematch at The O2 Arena in London.

But Bellew lost his cool and shoved his right arm into Haye's throat. Security stepped in, and order was quickly restored between the pair.

The 35-year-old Bellew accused 'The Hayemaker' on trying to 'put his lips on mine' during the face-off, and that is why he pushed the former heavyweight world champion.

Haye, 37, is a former world champion at heavyweight and cruiserweight had a different version of events.

"I think he tried to verbally get to me, get under my skin, and that didn't work," he said. "He probably thought, if I give him a shove that might get him."

The fight is a rematch of last year's epic contest which Bellew won via TKO in the 11th round in March 2017.

In that fight last year,  Haye boxed half the battle with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while Bellow broke his hand during the match.

Wearing a cap emblazoned with the word 'revenge', Haye said he would consider retiring if he can't win the fight.

"It solely depends on the manner in which I win this fight, whether I even continue boxing you know.

"Even if I win this fight it doesn't mean I'll continue to box. If I win this fight but don't look as spectacular as I think I can, then there was a miscalculation somewhere, and I'm not as good as I believe I am.

"I'll have a real close look at my future after this fight and see where the heavyweight landscape pans out and take it from there."

Both fighters have different histories working with former WBO champion Joseph Parker. Bellew has previously called Joseph Parker, wanting to fight the Kiwi in the future, while Haye was stopped in Parker's camp, helping him prepare for his fight against Anthony Joshua last month.
