Cricket: Wellington's Basin Reserve museum set for refurbish

The future of the Basin Reserve's heritage-listed 'Museum Stand' looks all-but assured.

The quake-prone stand has been closed to spectators since 2012 and under the threat of demolition.

Now the indications are it will be saved, refurbished and strengthened, pending a Wellington City Council meeting next week.

"If we can earthquake-strengthen it, that will give it a life span of at least 50 years," says Wellington Mayor Justin Lester.

"We want this to remain New Zealand's premier cricketing venue and one of the best cricketing grounds in the entire world."

The cost of refurbishment will be about $7 million, approximately 10 times the cost of demolition.
