Kiwi cyclist George Bennett is set to finish the Giro D'Italia in a top 10 position.

The Nelson rider finished 14th on the penultimate 214km stage to Cervinia to sit eighth overall, with just the procession into Rome to come.

If he can hold onto that top 10 spot, the 28-year-old will achieve New Zealand cycling history by becoming the first Kiwi to do so at the Giro.

It would also be the best Grand Tour result accomplished by a New Zealand rider, eclipsing Bennett's 10th at the Vuelta a Espana two years ago.

Meanwhile, Chris Froome is set to complete a remarkable victory in the Giro after retaining the leader's pink jersey at the end of stage 20.

The Team Sky rider need only safely negotiate Sunday's (Monday NZ time) mostly ceremonial final stage to lay his hands on a third straight Grand Tour title, following his wins at the Tour de France and La Vuelta last year.

Froome, who held off reigning champion Tom Dumoulin, will become the first British rider to take the honours at the Giro and join Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault as the only other men to hold the three Grand Tour titles simultaneously.

The final stage is 115km, which takes the riders into Rome.
