Kiwi George Bennett has endured a horrible day at the Giro d'Italia, slipping from sixth to eighth in the general classification.

The Nelson rider endured mechanical problems on the final climb within 10km of the finish, and ended up crossing the line in 12th - 1m 55s behind stage 14 winner Chris Froome, who jumped to fifth in the standings.

While Bennett maintained his top-10 spot, he now sits 4m 4s behind pink jersey holder Simon Yates.

"The chain jammed," Bennett said after the stage.

"It will be hard to come back now, but we will try."

It continues a run of bad luck for the 28-year-old in some of the biggest tours in the world. Last year he was forced to pull out of the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana due to illness, and was hit by a car just before the Tour of the Alps.

Stage 15 begins on Sunday night (NZ time) at Tolmezzo and runs 176km to Sappada.
