Kiwi darts player Cody Harris won his maiden Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) title on Sunday morning (NZ time) in Wigan.

'The Codestar' claimed victory in the ninth PDC Challenge Tour event in Wigan, after defeating Yordi Meeuwisse 5-2 in the final.

The New Zealander began the day with a 5-1 win over David Edwards, followed by victories over Jamie Kelling, Matt Jackson, Reece Robinson and Nick Fullwell as he progressed to the quarter-finals.

Harris then eased past Simon Preston 5-0 before trumping Jason Cullen to qualify for the final.

The 32-year-old won £2000 ($NZ3857) for beating Meeuwisse in the final.

He then competed in the tenth Challenge Tour immediately after, but he couldn't repeat his efforts as he lost in the round of 32.

The Challenge Tour circuit is open to players who participated at Q-School earlier in the year but failed to win a tour card. The two top-ranked players at the conclusion of all 20 events will receive a PDC tour card for the two following seasons at the end of the season.

Harris currently sits in eighth in the standings, £850 ($NZ1639) behind second place.

The father of five will compete in two more Challenge Tour events in Wigan on Monday (NZ time) before he flies to Germany to represent New Zealand the World Cup of Darts alongside Warren Parry next month
