EPL: Football 'expert' loses Huddersfield relegation bet, dresses as Muppet

The serious business of English Premier League relegation has spawned an amusing subplot, as Sky Sports football analyst Paul Merson turned up to work dressed as a muppet.

The former England and Arsenal midfielder began the current league season with a prediction that if Huddersfield Town managed to avoid the slide to Championship play, he would wear a Gonzo costume on his weekly show.

"You know what I like about them - they give it a go," said Merson. "I like the owner - he spent money and wanted to stay in the league.

"I would be more than happy to dress up as Gonzo if Huddersfield stayed up, because they've had a go."

With a 1-1 midweek draw against Chelsea, the Terriers secured their spot in the top division for next season and Merson was made to 'face the music' on his latest Premier League Predictions appearance.

Merson expressed his disappointment at Chelsea's lapse, but was a good sport about the result.

"A bet's a bet," he conceded.
