Kiwi golfer Michael Hendry has qualified for the British Open Championship after finishing runner-up at the Mizuno Open in Japan.

Hendry overcame a bogey on the final hole to finish in a three-way tie for second to book his spot at the Open for the second straight year, which will be held at Carnoustie in Scotland in July.

The 38-year-old was leading heading into the final day of play, but only managed a two-over 74 to end up one-shot behind eventual winner Shota Akiyoshi.

It was a moment of relief for Hendry after he had done enough to finish in the top four qualifying spots.

"Pretty knackered to be honest; it was a long wait. It's the longest golf course I've ever played by a long way," he told Newshub.

"Obviously being in the lead or close to the lead for the bulk of it, you're obviously on edge a little bit, little bit of nerves and expectation going through so pretty tired at the moment but pretty happy with my result as well."

Hendry admits it was a bittersweet moment to have qualified after the letting the lead slip away, but is looking forward to the challenge of the Open once again.

"First and foremost, my goal is to win the tournament and that obviously seals the deal with the Open as well, but a particularly hard golf and anything can happen," he told Newshub.

"To give myself a chance to get in the playoff on 18 I felt was a pretty good effort, then a little bit unlucky on 18 and ended up making bogey but all in all, can't complain.

"Would've liked to have won but coming second and getting a ticket through to the Open is fantastic as well.

"It's amazing, professional golf is all about playing in big tournaments and trying to put yourself out there against the best in the world.

"Playing another major and having another crack at an Open Championship is exactly why I play the game and I really can't wait to get over there and hopefully fingers crossed I'll be able to put in a better showing than I did last."
