ESPN has published their annual list of the top 100 most famous athletes - and there's not a Kiwi in sight.

The powerhouse American sports network uses a formula that combines three principle factors when assessing the candidates – search score, sponsorship earnings and social media following.

Golfer Lydia Ko was the most likely New Zealander to crack the list, but her slip in both form and the world rankings over the past year have seen her fade from the limelight.

The highest-ranked female golfer is Michelle Wie, who scraped in at 97.

Unsurprisingly, footballers dominate the list, occupying 34 places.

Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Ronaldo sits atop the rankings, closely followed by Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Neymar within the top five.

Cricketers are also well represented with a total of 10, with India's Virat Kohli the highest at 11.
