Netball: Netball NZ name panel to review Commonwealth Games debacle

  • 07/05/2018

Lawyer and sports director Don Mackinnon will chair the high-powered panel set to review the Silver Ferns' failed Commonwealth Games campaign.

Mackinnon, who's been involved with New Zealand Cricket, Rugby League and Athletics, said he's determined to dig as deep as he can into what was behind the disastrous showing on the Gold Coast.

"If you look at the performance of the Ferns over the past two years there have been some highs and lows, so it's important to look at where things have gone right, and then where things have got off-track," Mackinnon told Newshub.

"I've absolutely no doubt that the Netball NZ staff and board are committed to improvement. I know they, and the players and themselves, are disappointed by what happened at the Commonwealth Games."

The Silver Ferns dropped four games as they failed to make the final for the first time since 1998, including a stunning loss to minnows Malawi.

The three-person team also includes Team New Zealand's Kevin Shoebridge and former Fern Linda Vagana.

The panel will also take a look at netball in New Zealand in a broader sense, in particular its high performance pathways.

The inquiry is set to last approximately five to six weeks.
