Rugby: Sam Whitelock shapes as All Blacks captaincy favourite for series against France

Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock's ready and willing to lead the way for the All Blacks in next month's tests against France.

With Kieran Read unavailable as he recovers from back surgery, Whitelock is a leading candidate to be named as skipper when the squad's announced next week.

Although he says he hasn't discussed it with Steve Hansen just yet.

"I'm happy to help the team out in any way, on or off the field," he told Newshub.

The 29-year-old was captain against Wales in November, picked ahead of two-time skipper Sam Cane and tour vice-captain Beauden Barrett.

Barrett was in charge against the Barbarians three weeks earlier, but by Cardiff the selectors preferred him to focus on his first five responsibilities.

"I enjoy my role of leading the team from an attack perspective and being a game driver on the field," said the Hurricanes pivot.

While he doesn't expect to get the nod, but he does confirm the role has featured in recent leadership group meetings.

"There's always discussions about how we can get better and we'd be silly not to talk about who will lead the team."

Ben Smith would also have featured in those discussions. He led against Samoa last year and was Read's deputy before heading off on his sabbatical.

Whitelock says no matter who gets it, the structure of their leadership group should ensure success.

"The best thing is you don't have to change who you are or how you lead. There's a number of guys there who can help out."
