Sailing: MAPFRE stuns Team Brunel to win eighth leg of Volvo Ocean Race

Blair Tuke and MAPFRE have snuck an unlikely victory on the eighth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race on Wednesday morning (NZ time).

The Spanish yacht was back in fifth place, with three hundred miles left in the long voyage from Brazil to Rhode Island, but they took advantage of the shifty conditions - to overtake Peter Burling and Team Brunel less than 500m from the line.

Team Brunel finished second and American-Danish entry Vestas 11th Hour Racing, whose home port is Newport, finished third.

It was a massive win for MAPFRE who now sit atop of the overall standings with three legs remaining in the world race.

"We managed to keep chipping away and taking the opportunities when they came," said Tuke after the race.

"To get one up over Team Brunel right at the end in the last few hundred metres was a nice little icing on the cake."

Beating his America's Cup teammate was a special moment for Tuke, but even more special was the fact his mum was in Rhode Island to see him cross the line.

"It's always nice to see family on the dock, especially coming up from Brazil to here being so far away from home, it's always nice to have family here.

"I thought she was going to miss us because we arrived a couple of days early than what the ETA was, but she managed to change things to be here, so that makes it much more special."

There will be an in-port race on May 20 (NZ time) before the ninth leg of the series which will see teams race 3300 nautical miles to Cardiff, Wales.
