Blues coach Tana Umaga wants to know why Owen Franks wasn't sent off for a late high shot on James Parsons during his side's 32-24 loss to the Crusaders.

The All Blacks forward hit hooker James Parsons in the head with a swinging arm, which forced the Blues vice-captain from the field. Referee Glen Jackson gave Franks a warning and nothing else.

Franks is alleged to have contravened Law 9.12: Striking a player with the arm, and upon further review of the match footage, the citing commissioner at the Foul Play Review Committee said it met the threshold for a red card.

With that in mind, Umaga wants to know why Franks wasn't sent off during the match.

"I'm sure there are protocols around contact with the head, I think that's the simple thing," Umaga said.

"First and foremost it's the safety of our players. That's what we're looking for; we had two guys come off. I'm sure there will be questions asked - there should be. We'll see what happens there.

"I don't know how [the referees] came up with their conclusion. There's no doubt we'll challenge it. We'll ask the reasons why and who is accountable for it."

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson told media afterwards that he was unaware of what went on with the Franks decision and was not prepared to comment on it.

Umaga was also furious about an incident involving Blues fullback Matt Duffie and Crusaders winger Manasa Mataele when the pair collided taking a high ball in the first half.

"It's the same thing. There are protocols in place about who has the advantage and what that looks like. Duffs is asking us now should I go up for high balls if I'm going to come down like that all the time. Again, that's safety."

Highlanders wing Tevita Nabura.

Last week Crusaders All Blacks prop Joe Moody was cited and suspended two weeks for a dangerous act against Waratahs back Kurtley Beale.

Meanwhile, Highlanders wing Tevita Nabura will also appear before the Foul Play Review Committee after receiving a red card for kicking an opponent in their loss to the Waratahs.

Nabura is alleged to have contravened Law 9.12: Kicking when he made contact with opposite wing Cam Clark at the Allianz Stadium.

Nabura will front the committee at 7pm Sunday (NZ time).
