Kiwi sailor Peter Burling's Team Brunel are the first boat into Cardiff after completing the ninth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

They crossed the finish line four minutes ahead of AkzoNobel, picking up 15 points to move within striking distance of the race lead with just two legs remaining.

The win continues a remarkable turnaround in form, putting the sixth placing in Auckland behind them to earn two first places and a second through the last three legs.

"We're very happy with the result – to beat the two red boats was the objective," said skipper Bouwe Bekking

"Winning of course is nice to get the bonus point and then a nice fight to beat AkzoNobel in the end as well, so we're a happy team.

"But the aim is to keep looking forward. We've closed the gap to MAPFRE and Dongfeng and victory remains our main objective."

The next leg to Gothenburg, Sweden begins on June 10.
