The White Ferns made Twenty20 history at Taunton, England on Thursday (NZT) – if only for a few hours.

Led by a bruising 124 from captain Suzie Bates, New Zealand blasted 216/1, the highest score in women's international T20 history, against South Africa in their Tri-Nation fixture.

But the record lasted less than four hours.

Hosts England followed suit, smashing 250/3 against the same opposition, who were tasked with back-to-back matches against the world's top two sides.

White Ferns opening pair Bates and Sophie Devine combined for 182, with both players blasting career-best knocks.

Devine hit 73 from 48 balls, but Bates stole the headlines becoming the first New Zealander to notch a T20 hundred.

Her 124 from 66 balls included 16 fours and three sixes.

Bates then plucked two sharp catches in the field, as South Africa fell 66 runs short in their reply.
